J: Cubby’s was different. Not your typical “Burger-Fries-Shake” joint. The fry sauce was good. The burgers have unique flairs.
C: There’s no “basic burger.” They’re creative. I got the Dragonslayer. Bacon, bleu cheese, tomato, onions, pickles, spring mix (not lettuce), and buffalo sauce.
J: I had the Gypsy. It’s as basic as they get, but it’s essentially a BBQ bacon burger.
C: Patties are ⅓ pound, so they’re a little thick. The burger was good, but I thought the patty was not the strength of the burger. It’s quality angus beef but the texture was a little mushy and pasty. Kind of soft. The flavor didn’t come primarily from the beef. It came from the buffalo sauce and the greens.
J: We might have gotten different quality burgers there. C: Maybe. Or maybe we’re just different people.
J: Haha! I enjoyed the buns.
C: They were artisanal-style.
J: It was a strong, firm bun. I really liked the burger. There were quality ingredients and it all fit together well. C: I liked mine too. I hoped for a little more from the patty but the buffalo and bleu cheese combo is so strong, and having spring mix rather than plain lettuce is refreshing. Let’s talk rosemary fries. J: They were great. Thin, stringy, a little oily. I love the shoestring fries. Why? I just...I don’t know--I can’t explain it. I don’t know. Cut that out of the review, me saying that. C: No. J: Rosemary fries aren’t common, so there’s not a lot to compare to, but I think these were some of the better ones. C: It’s a little bit of a soft trend right now. The rosemary wasn’t overpowering. They were a little soft and pale but they worked with the burger. They fit the natural style of the restaurant, of the whole meal, really.
J: Their fry sauce was really good. And that makes a lot of difference with fries.
C: You get a shake?
J: Yes, I did. It was a good shake, and--this is going to sound weird, but if you’ve ever had an Arby’s shake-- C: What?!
J: --and I like Arby’s shakes! It was great. Vanilla shake, ice cream and milk. None of this fro-yo soft serve custard nonsense.
C: You know what? I got the Hucklelala shake. I felt the same way. This is milk and ice cream blended together. The impression I got from the Hucklelala shake was that it was really similar to a shake you’d make at home. Very homemade, very real. J: It got runny quickly but it started out thick.
C: The Huckleberry flavor was good and it had little bits of chocolate in it that gave it some texture, I liked it a lot. It was original without being too weird, and too out there, and it was very natural.
J: Cubby’s whole thing is natural, organic--none of it tasted manufactured. I would say that if you’re a food enthusiast there’s a lot to love here. As a burger enthusiast there’s a little bit to like.
